Protecting young smiles from the very first tooth is very important.

At Priors Hall Dental, we are passionate about prevention but also about eliminating or minimising dental phobias.

Your child will usually start to get their milk teeth at around 6-months. We recommend your child has received their first dental examination at least by the age of 2. Following this, checkups are advised between 3 – 12 months. Plaque can start to form on young teeth as soon as they emerge, and it’s important to implement a good oral health routine early and we are here to help.

Keeping a healthy smile

You are in the best position to help your child to understand the importance of keeping their teeth clean and problem-free. Encourage them to brush regularly and teach the effects of diet and lifestyle on their teeth and gums.

We are here to support you at every stage of your child’s development whilst making the dental experience a little more fun.

How to look after your children’s teeth?

  • Seeing the dentist regularly
  • Reducing sugary snacks and drinks and limiting sugars mealtimes
  • Having a balanced diet with plenty of water
  • Use of sugar-free medicines
  • Using a fluoride toothpaste
  • Mouthwash mid-day or after a meal can help
  • Brush well, 2x daily – and make this a positive routine
  • Do not send kids to bed with sugary drinks – This can destroy teeth extraordinarily quickly!

How can I encourage my child to brush their teeth?

Learning the importance of brushing teeth at a young age and incorporating good habits puts one in the best position for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. One of the challenges is to keep up the twice-daily cleaning momentum and the second is simply not brushing for long enough.

We have a few tips and tricks to help you encourage your child to maintain a good oral health routine:

  • Use music – Play their favourite song and challenge them to keep brushing until its end – similar trends are starting to become obvious on social media like TikTok – maybe you could come up with your challenge – be creative.
  • Dental apps – There are plenty of online apps that make brushing teeth more engaging and even game-like for your child
  • Fun toothpaste – You can place the toothpaste into a pump or use different flavours as this can help with getting little ones brushing
  • Roleplay – Children are incredibly creative and role-playing can prepare your child for what to expect from a dentist visit and to help keep them engaged.

Confident children = Confident adults

We regularly find that individuals are worried to attend the dentist. We find there are many reasons for this, however, past traumatising experiences, the unknown and lack of familiarity are the most common for fears and anxieties to manifest. You can help your child become a dentist confident.

Regular visits to the dentist for checkups will help them to understand the processes and what to expect, as well as build a relationship with myself. We work hard to make the trip to the dentist a pleasant experience.
