Root Canal Treatment, Northampton

An infected tooth can cause pain, swelling, and serious health problems. If you’re dealing with advanced tooth decay, it may require a root canal treatment.

When is root canal treatment required?

Root canal treatment – or endodontic treatment – is required when there is an infection deep within your tooth, affecting the blood and nerve supply. You may not experience any pain or discomfort during the early stages of an infection. If left untreated, this kind of infection can not only be very painful but can lead to a tooth abscess or even tooth loss.

Are antibiotics an alternative to endodontic treatment?

When you develop an infection in direct relation to a tooth, it is no longer alive. The pain you feel arises in the tissues that hold and support the teeth in place. Infections can be settled by prescription antibiotics, however these only provide a short term solution. While the antibiotics are helpful, the root cause of the problem has not been resolved. Root canal treatment involves thorough disinfection of the inside of the tooth – the root canal system.

What does root canal treatment involve?

Root canal treatment removes the infection from the tooth, before sealing the tooth to protect the filling that has been placed to restore you back to good oral health. This endodontic treatment is always carried out by a root canal dentist, while you’re under an aesthetic which is used to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout the process.

How do I avoid the need for root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment can be avoided by practising good dental care. Regular visits for checkups mean that we are in a good position to pick up on any problems you may not have noticed yourself. We will check any current fillings or crowns for damage or cracks. By treating issues in the early stages, you avoid infections and further complications that would ultimately lead to the need for root canal treatment.
